Cognitive Dysfunction and Co-morbid Psychiatric Disturbances in Chronic Allergic Conditions

Patients with mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) often report having “brain fog,” which has been noted in other chronic illnesses. We previously identified evidence of cognitive dysfunction a small number MCAS patients via testing, though depression and anxiety are potentially confounders. sought to compare the presence rhinitis (CR) spontaneous urticaria (CSU) that MCAS. hypothesize similar degrees dysfunction, depression, as observed may be found CSU rather than CR given more significant symptom burden former group. referred University Wisconsin Allergy clinic for evaluation MCAS, CR, were identified. enrolled female between ages 18 50 based on demographics our population IRB-approved protocol. Executive function was assessed validated computer battery (CogState). PHQ-9 GAD-7 questionnaires administered assess co-morbid psychiatric disorders.
